Adult Workshops

PACP is excited to be offering an acting workshop by such a gifted actor, mentor, and teacher. Paul Kiernan (a recent Port Angeles transplant) has graciously offered his time to teach this great workshop, allowing us to offer what would normally be a $400+ workshop for a recommended fee of just $100 (to help cover overhead) or a pay-what-you-can fee.

WHAT:
A four week class for actors who are looking to recharge and get back to the basics of what interested them, inspired them and got them into a life of arts and acting.
We will explore;
–Improvisation, as it relates to text.
–Shakespeare, how simple fun and inspiring it can be.
–Scene study, making clean, deep, active, choices.
–Clown, as related to character development and scene work.
–And, whatever else comes up during the class, this will be monologues, games, audition pieces or anything else we find interesting.
This class will move quickly and through many different aspects of what an actor knows, should know, needs to know and is just simply fun to rediscover. It will challenge you, push you and require you to be present all the time. You get out what you put in, just like anything else.
Whether a seasoned actor or someone just beginning, this class will help you reconnect (or connect the first time) with your strengths, revisit and improve upon some weaknesses and, above all, step outside what is comfortable for you and try something for the sake of stretching yourself.
WHO;
This class will be good for people who have been acting for some time and want to free themselves up and touch base with the basics as well as people who are just starting out and are looking for basic tools, inspiration and an understanding of what works for them as actors.
Taught By:
Paul Kiernan, an actor, writer, director with over 30 years experience in the business. I have worked in; regional theaters all over the country, classical theater companies, film, television, radio, theme parks, (writer, performer, director for Walt Disney World for ten years). I have taught at Yale University, Boston College, Harvard University, Brandeis University, The University of Utah, BYU as well as private coaching. I bring experience as a clown, a fight director and a working actor to the table.
Details
-Four consecutive Saturdays starting April 11th at 3:30 pm
-Three to four hours per sessions, I am flexible on this, if it’s going well, if we are all engaged and working, I have no problem spending more time. Never less than three hours per session.
-You should attend all classes. Others in the class will rely on you for scene work, for encouragement. Be present. Even when someone else is working you are learning from it. Make the commitment to yourself and the class.
-You will want to have;
-One classical monologue. Be familiar with it, memorized if you want.*
-One contemporary monologue. Be familiar with it.*
-One, two person scene and the full play to go along with that scene.*
-Clothes and shoes to MOVE IN. Be prepared to be down on the floor and to do some fighting.
*-Please have read the entire play that you have taken the monologue or scene from, DO NOT pull a monologue from a monologue book, that helps no one. Also, bring copies of the pieces for me to look at as well.
“Paul is the complete, salt-of-the-earth character man … his process is always inclusive and based on warmth and camaraderie. He is a lion-hearted acrobat of the soul.”
Tom Martin Associate Professor, Saint Louis University
“In rehearsal Paul is ever the teacher, from simply modeling professionalism and courtesy to actively taking the time to do extra work with less experienced actors. In the last show we worked on together, End Days, he spent hours working his scenes in the green room with a struggling student actor. Paul helped him to develop his character, but more importantly, he taught him the skills the student needed to do this in future productions.”
Kirstie Gulick Rosenfield, PhD Director, Salt Lake City, Utah
“Paul is the most respected actor in the Salt Lake area. I have never seen work to surpass his anywhere in the country. He is a major, major talent … He is a keen observer, and articulate advocate, clear about his standards and the reasons supporting them.”
Julie Jensen Playwright, Dramatists Guild of America Utah Region
